You find it most often on back-of-house retail doors, employee entrances, parking garage stairwells, multi-family corridor exits, and clinic back doors. It is the cost-effective Grade 1 specification for applications that do not require the institutional depth of the 98/99 Series but still need certified egress hardware.

The 22 Series ships in two primary configurations:

• 22 Rim: mounts on the door face and latches into a single rim strike on the frame
• 2227 SVR (Surface Vertical Rod): adds top and bottom rods that engage strikes at the header and floor, covering double doors without a center post

How to Identify Your 22 Series Configuration Before Ordering Parts

Getting the right part starts with knowing exactly which version of the 22 Series is installed. There are four things to confirm before placing any order.

1. Rim or Surface Vertical Rod

Look at the door. If the exit device mounts flat on the door face and connects to a single strike on the frame at the latch side, it is a 22 rim device. If you see metal rods running vertically from the device body up to the header and down to the floor, with strikes at the top and bottom of the door frame, it is a 2227 SVR device.

This identification step matters before ordering a center case. The 22 rim center case (109012) and the 2227 SVR center case (109358) look similar but are not interchangeable. Ordering the wrong one is the most common mistake on this device.

2. Panic or Fire Rated

Fire-rated devices are marked with an "F" suffix in the model number (22-F or 2227-F). On fire-rated devices, the hex key dogging is removed and replaced with a fire-rated latch that cannot be held open. Do not install a dogging assembly on a fire-rated device. It will compromise the fire rating and cause the device to fail NFPA 80 annual inspection.

3. Manufacturing Date

Find the device label on the mechanism body, typically near the model number. Devices manufactured before July 1997 use an older style dogging shaft approximately 1.5 inches long with a 0.5-inch diameter. Current devices use the updated hex dogging shaft (090040). If your device predates July 1997, call Security Parts at 845-935-0301 before ordering dogging components.

4. Hex Dogging or Cylinder Dogging

The 22 Series ships with hex key dogging as standard. Look at the hinge-side end behind the cover plate. A small hex socket means hex key dogging. A mortise-cylinder keyway means cylinder dogging, which is a factory option or field conversion that allows a mortise cylinder to hold the latch open instead of requiring an Allen key.

Dogging Assembly Parts

The dogging assembly holds the latch in the retracted position so the door swings freely without triggering the panic release on every push. It sits on the hinge side of the device behind the cover plate. The assembly consists of five main components, all stocked individually or in packs.

Center Case and Cover Plate

The center case is the housing that contains the panic mechanism. Replace it when the latch no longer retracts smoothly or when internal mechanism failure is confirmed.

There are two separate center cases for the 22 Series. Ordering the wrong one is a common and expensive mistake:

• 22 Rim center case (part 109012): for the standard rim device
• 2227 SVR center case (part 109358): for the surface vertical rod device

The Cover Plate Anti-Rattle Spring (090036) is worth replacing whenever the cover plate is removed. It is a low-cost part that stops the plate from rattling and is the correct time to service it.

End Cap and Mechanism Housing

End cap failure is the single most common fault on the 22 Series. The plastic end cap (part 900981) sits at the hinge-side end of the device and holds the dogging cover plate in its channel. When the end cap cracks or breaks, the cover plate slides out and falls off, exposing the dogging assembly.

The correct fix is to replace the End Cap Kit (900981), which includes both the end cap and the steel mounting bracket. Since October 2014, Von Duprin discontinued selling the end cap alone and ships only the complete kit.

Two additional parts are serviced in the same area:

• NL Drive Screw Pack of 10 (090074): for Night Latch function hardware at the end cap side
• Pine Tree Clip Pack of 10 (090099): used on 360-series trim and commonly serviced at the same time as end cap work

Baseplate Assembly Parts

The baseplate is the mounting plate that attaches the exit device to the door face. Baseplate components take direct wear on every push-bar activation and are among the most commonly replaced parts on high-use doors.

Parts Specific to the 2227 Surface Vertical Rod Configuration

The 2227 SVR adds top and bottom vertical rods that run inside the door to engage strikes at the header and floor. These components require their own replacement hardware distinct from the rim device.

Fire Latch Strike Kit for 22-F and 2227-F

Fire-rated configurations use a latch that cannot be held open. The LBR Fire Latch Strike Kit (050171-32) is the correct replacement for the fire-rated latch assembly on 22-F and 2227-F devices.
