What the Falcon 5494 Auxiliary Fire Pin Kit Does

LBR (Less Bottom Rod) exit devices are installed without a bottom bolt at the door threshold. This configuration is specified when carpet, raised access flooring, glass bottom rails, or other floor conditions make a standard bottom bolt installation impractical. Without the bottom rod, the lower portion of the door has no positive latching point - which creates a fire rating compliance problem.

The Falcon 5494 auxiliary fire latch kit installs a spring-loaded latch bolt at the lower door edge specifically for fire conditions. Under normal building operation, the latch is held retracted by a fusible heat-sensitive element inside the kit. When a fire event heats the door area to the fusible element's release temperature, the element melts and releases the spring-loaded latch bolt. The latch bolt extends and engages the floor strike, positively latching the bottom of the door closed. Per the official Falcon F-25-V product documentation: "When exposed to heat, the auxiliary latch bolt releases, keeping the doors in alignment and closed during a fire."

This mechanism is separate from the standard exit device fire pin in the center case or top latch. The 5494 is the auxiliary system that addresses the bottom of the door specifically in the LBR configuration.

Falcon F-25-C and F-25-V: LBR Fire Rating Requirements

The Falcon F-25-C and F-25-V are the fire-rated (UL 10C positive pressure listed) versions of the Falcon 25 Series concealed and surface vertical rod exit devices. The fire-rated versions carry an "A" label certification for 3-hour fire doors on hollow metal assemblies up to 8 feet by 8 feet. On 90-minute same-egress assemblies, the fire rating extends to 8 feet by 8 feet as well.

For the standard (with bottom rod) configuration, the bottom bolt engages a floor strike and provides bottom latching in fire conditions through the standard exit device vertical rod mechanism. For the LBR configuration, the 5494 auxiliary fire latch kit replaces that functionality with a fire-activated latching mechanism, allowing the door to maintain its UL fire label despite the absence of the conventional bottom rod.

The Falcon 25-V product catalog explicitly states: "Less bottom rod vertical device. Auxiliary fire pin required per pair." This means for every LBR door pair in a fire-rated application, the 5494 must be installed. Without it, the LBR configuration does not meet the UL fire door requirements.
