The Schlage L9580 is a Grade 1 mortise lock chassis built for storeroom function openings that require remote-controlled latch retraction. It's a latch retraction only chassis, meaning the motor retracts the latchbolt when power is applied, allowing the door to swing open without any key or lever action on the outside. The outside lever is always fixed in the storeroom configuration, the inside lever is always free for immediate egress, and a key outside manually retracts the latchbolt when needed without power. This is the correct specification for storage areas, service closets, loading docks, utility rooms, and controlled-access corridors where the door needs to open on signal without user interaction on the outside.

This chassis is sold as a single cylinder. The appropriate cylinder is ordered separately based on the keying specification for the opening.

How the Schlage L9580 Storeroom Function Works

The L9580 operates on a simple and reliable access logic. In the powered state, the stepper motor inside the chassis retracts the latchbolt, releasing the door to open freely. When power is removed, the latchbolt extends and the door is secured. That behavior is inherently fail secure, which makes the L9580 the right choice for storerooms and secured areas where you want the door locked by default and open only when a credential or signal is applied.

The deadlocking auxiliary latch engages when the door is fully closed, preventing the latchbolt from being shimmed or manipulated while the door is shut. The inside lever always allows free egress regardless of power state, keeping the opening code-compliant for life safety requirements.

Schlage L9580 Technical Specifications

The L9580 runs on 24 VDC only. AC power must not be used with this chassis. The acceptable input voltage range is 21.6 VDC to 28 VDC. Peak current draw during latch retraction is 1.4 amps, and the holding current once the latch is retracted drops to 0.10 amps. Operating temperature range is 32°F to 120°F (0°C to 49°C) with a maximum relative humidity of 85%.

The lock case is cold-rolled steel with corrosion-resistant zinc dichromate plating. Case size is 4-7/16 inches by 6-1/16 inches by 1 inch (113mm x 154mm x 25mm), and lever-to-cylinder spacing is 3-7/8 inches (98mm). Standard door thickness is 1-3/4 inches (44mm), with a minimum of 1-3/8 inches (35mm). Doors up to 4 inches thick are supported by specifying the door position configuration (EE, EI, EO, or ED). The chassis is non-handed.

The L9580 ships with a factory-installed Allegion Connect Molex connector for simplified installation using quick-connect harnesses and electrified hinges. If traditional wire splicing is preferred, the Molex connector can be cut off and the included 6-inch wiring harness used instead.

RX and LX Monitoring Options

The L9580 supports both the Request to Exit (RX) and Latchbolt Monitor (LX) options. The RX module uses a microswitch inside the lock case to detect rotation of the inside lever, signaling your access control panel each time someone exits. The LX switch monitors the latchbolt status (extended or retracted) with normally open, normally closed, and common connections, each rated at 2A and 30V DC. Both RX and LX are available on the L9580, giving your access control system real-time visibility into door status without a separate sensor in the frame.
