The base behavior is the standard storeroom function: the outside lever is always locked from the corridor side, requiring a key or authorized credential for outside entry at all times. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress regardless of the lock state.

The Motorized Latch Retraction (MLR) layer adds remote electric latch retraction. When a valid credential is presented at a connected card reader, fob reader, or PIN pad, the motor in the chassis retracts the latch bolt, allowing the authorized user to push or pull the door open without using a key. This is the primary integration point with access control systems in secure storeroom applications - pharmaceutical storage, IT server rooms, secure evidence rooms, restricted access corridors, and controlled campus buildings where keyless access logging and card-based access management are required.

The outside lever can still accommodate a conventional cylinder for mechanical override and authorized key entry when the access control system is offline or during a power failure.
