Schlage XL12-207 Solid Spring Cage

For Use With L Series

The Schlage XL12-207 is the solid spring cage replacement part for the Schlage L Series Grade 1 mortise lock family. It's the component labeled "E Spring cage or spacer" in the official L Series installation instructions, used during lever and escutcheon trim assembly on L9000 Series locks. When this part fails or wears out, the lever on an L Series lock loses its return tension and will droop or fail to snap back to horizontal after each use, which is one of the most common service calls on high-traffic L Series installations.

The "solid" designation distinguishes this part from the standard finishable spring cage. The XL12-207 is a solid-body construction specifically designed for use with L Series trim configurations where a solid spring cage is required rather than a finish-matched version.

What Does the XL12-207 Spring Cage Do in an L Series Mortise Lock?

The spring cage in a Schlage L Series mortise lock houses the lever return spring mechanism. Every time a lever is depressed to retract the latchbolt or activate a lock function, the spring cage is what drives the lever back to its neutral horizontal position when released. The arrows molded or marked on the spring cage indicate the direction of lever downward rotation, which is critical to get right during installation. Orienting the spring cage backwards is a common installation error that causes the lever to bind or fail to return properly.

On L Series escutcheon trim installations, the spring cage is installed onto the spindle during the outside assembly step, before the escutcheon and lever are mounted to the door. The cage seats onto the spindle housing and must be correctly oriented to the handing of the door before any fasteners are tightened.

L Series Mortise Lock Compatibility

The XL12-207 is designed for use with the Schlage L Series mortise lock platform, which covers over 40 functional options in the L9000 family. That includes passage, exit, privacy, entrance, office, corridor, classroom, storeroom, institutional, and all associated electrified and deadbolt variants. The L Series is Schlage's most comprehensive mortise lock line, built to Grade 1 standards and specified widely in K-12 schools, hospitals, universities, government facilities, and commercial office buildings where consistent, heavy-duty hardware is required across every opening.

The L Series supports standard door thickness of 1-3/4 inches (44mm), with a minimum of 1-3/8 inches (35mm) and with door position configurations (EE, EI, EO, ED) for thicker applications. The lock body is field-reversible without disassembly. All L Series functions are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors and meet California fire code requirements on compliant lever designs.

When to Order the XL12-207

If an L Series lever is sagging, not returning to center after use, binding during operation, or producing resistance in the wrong direction, the spring cage is one of the first components to inspect. On high-cycle openings like hospital corridors, school hallways, and commercial restrooms, the spring cage takes more fatigue stress than almost any other trim component and is a routine part of scheduled preventive maintenance on L Series locks.

One spring cage is required per side per lever. An opening with levers on both sides requires two units.

For the full range of Schlage L Series trim components, including spindle and spring assemblies, mounting plates, and related hardware, SecurityParts stocks the complete L Series service parts catalog.
