The Von Duprin 050671 is the OEM E996 locking mechanism kit for the E996L-R&V electrified lever trim, including the 24VDC solenoid pre-mounted to the blocking mechanism. Per Allegion's official knowledge base (instruction 921297), this is the correct field replacement kit when the E996L solenoid fails on a 98/99 Series or 33/35A rim or vertical rod exit device installation.

This part is discontinued by Von Duprin. SecurityParts has remaining stock available. Once current inventory is exhausted, this kit will no longer be available as a new OEM replacement. The current Von Duprin-supported upgrade path for E996L installations is the M996L motorized lever trim conversion kit -see the upgrade section below.

Von Duprin Locking Mech Kit: What the 050671 Includes and Does

The 050671 kit contains the complete locking mechanism assembly with the 24VDC solenoid already mounted to the blocking mechanism, the wire harness, and the NL drive screw. It is not a solenoid-only replacement. The kit replaces the entire blocking mechanism subassembly -the solenoid plus the mechanical lever-locking interface -in a single removal-and-reinstall operation per installation instruction 921297.

The E996L trim uses the solenoid to control outside lever operation on exit device applications. The solenoid body measures 1-3/8" x 9/16" in diameter with a mounting bracket at 3/4" on-center hole spacing and a two-wire wiring harness plug. The solenoid is sometimes marked with the number 991342 on the solenoid body. Both 050671 and the now-discontinued solenoid-only part 050814 carried this underlying solenoid component.

The E996L operates at 0.22 amps continuous at 24VDC. On initial activation, the solenoid pulls a 16-amp inrush current through the pull coil to engage the blocking mechanism, then immediately drops to a 0.33-amp holding coil current maintained by the potted circuit breaker (050534). This inrush-to-hold architecture is why the potted circuit breaker is a required component on any E996L installation. Without it, the solenoid remains on the full 16-amp pull coil, which burns the coil within a short service period. If the installed E996L has no potted circuit breaker and the solenoid has failed, check for a burned coil condition before replacing only the solenoid kit -the circuit breaker must also be present for the replacement to survive.

Von Duprin 050671: E996L-R&V vs E996L-M Application

The 050671 (no suffix) is the locking mechanism kit for the E996L-R&V trim -the rim, surface vertical rod, and concealed vertical rod device applications. The companion version for mortise device applications is the 050671-00, which is the E996L-M (mortise prep) trim locking mechanism kit. These two are not interchangeable -the blocking mechanism geometry differs between R&V and mortise trim configurations. The compatible device types for the 050671 (this product) are all 98/99 Series rim and vertical rod configurations and 33/35A Series rim and vertical rod configurations running the E996L-R&V trim.

Von Duprin Exit Device Parts: M996L Motorized Upgrade Path

Von Duprin discontinued the E996L and its associated solenoid parts in favor of the M996L motorized lever trim. The M996L replaces the solenoid locking mechanism with a motor-driven module that is quieter, draws significantly less current, and is more mechanically robust in high-cycle applications. The conversion kit for transitioning an E996L-R&V installation to M996L is part number 47273111 (for rim, SVR, and CVR devices). For mortise device installations, the conversion kit is 47273112.

A 2024 mechanical electrified conversion kit from Von Duprin also provides a path to convert the solenoid mechanism to a mechanical electrified trim without the full motorized module replacement.
