The Falcon S76806 is the OEM lever spindle assembly for the Falcon MA Series and M Series Grade 1 mortise lock. It covers the standard door thickness range of 1-7/8" to 2-1/2", and ships as one spindle per unit with the required mounting screw. This is the field replacement for the spindle component when a lever becomes detached, strips at the spindle interface, or loses its engagement with the lock hub due to wear or damage. Without a correctly sized and seated spindle, the lever cannot transmit torque to the mortise chassis to retract the latch bolt or deadbolt.
One critical installation note confirmed in the Falcon MA Series service manual: the spindle with screw must always be installed on the inside lever. The outside lever uses mounting posts instead. Reversing this orientation will prevent correct lock operation.
Falcon MA Series Mortise Lock: What the Spindle Does
On a mortise lock, the lever trim connects to the lock chassis through a spindle. The spindle is a square or rectangular steel bar that passes through both the lever hub and into the lock hub inside the mortise case. When the lever is turned, the spindle rotates the hub, which in turn activates the latch bolt retraction mechanism. Without a functioning spindle, turning the lever does nothing - the lever rotates freely without engaging the chassis.
The Falcon MA Series spindle is specifically engineered as a breakaway component. Per the MA Series specifications, the spindle is designed to break away at a maximum torque of 480 in./lbs. This is a deliberate safety and protection design. If excessive force is applied to the lever - vandalism, forced entry attempts, or abusive use - the spindle fails first rather than allowing the force to transmit into and damage the more expensive mortise chassis components. A broken spindle is a cheap, fast field repair; a damaged mortise case is not.
Falcon MA Series and M Series Lock Compatibility
The S76806 spindle is listed for both the MA Series and the legacy M Series Falcon mortise locks. The Falcon MA Series is the current production line, introduced as the successor to the M Series. Both series share similar trim architecture and spindle geometry, which is why the S76806 covers both.
The Falcon MA Series is Grade 1 rated per ANSI A156.13, Series 1000, Operational and Security Grade 1. All MA Series locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire door assemblies under both neutral pressure (UL10B) and positive pressure (UL10C) conditions. The standard backset is 2-3/4". The cold-formed steel case is zinc dichromate plated for corrosion resistance. The lever trim uses independent heavy-duty springs, a two-piece stainless steel anti-friction latchbolt with 3/4" projection, and a 1" throw deadbolt with hardened steel, free-turning, saw-resistant rollers on keyed functions.
Falcon MA Series functions include passage (MA101), exit/connecting (MA161), privacy (MA301, MA311, MA321), classroom, storeroom, entrance, office, and a range of keyed configurations across the MA451 through MA571 range. The S76806 spindle is compatible across all MA Series lever-trim functions - this is not a function-specific part.
Falcon MA Series Parts: Door Thickness Sizing Note
The S76806 covers the standard door thickness range: 1-7/8" to 2-1/2". Doors outside this range require a different spindle length. The Falcon MA Series catalog lists cylinder length and spindle charts by door thickness range - confirm the door thickness measurement before ordering if the installation involves a non-standard door.
