When the L9040 or L9440 is ordered with outside indicator trim (OS-OCC), the indicator assembly occupies the outside face of the escutcheon. The Occupied/Vacant display window and the indicator mechanism physically change how the outside of the lock looks and what access points are available. Because of this, the standard thumbturn emergency key can no longer be used. Instead, Schlage's installation specifications direct that emergency override on the indicator version is performed by inserting a small flathead screwdriver, specifically the L583-689, into a designated access slot in the indicator escutcheon. This turns the release mechanism and allows the outside lever to operate even when the inside thumbturn has locked it.
