Von Duprin 299F Fire-Rated Strike Plate for Rim and Vertical Rod Panic Exit Devices
If your exit device carries an "F" in the model number, you need the 299F, not the 299. That's a fire-rated opening, and installing a non-rated strike in a rated assembly creates a code compliance gap that won't pass inspection. The Von Duprin 299F is the correct factory-specified strike for fire-rated rim and vertical rod exit devices in the 22F, 88F, 98F, and 99F series, and for use as the top strike on fire-rated surface vertical rod configurations.
This is a Grade 1 component built to the same dimensional spec as the standard 299, but constructed and certified for fire-rated openings. It ships with a shim and mounting screws included.
What Makes the 299F Different from the Standard 299 Strike?
The physical dimensions are nearly identical, but the certification is what separates them. The 299F is rated for use in fire-rated door assemblies, meaning it's been tested and listed for use in openings that require exit devices without a dogging pin or hex key to hold the device in the open position. Fire-rated exit devices can't be dogged open, and the strike must match that listing.
If you're replacing a strike on an exit device that shows "F" in the model suffix, such as 22EO-F, 22L-F, 99NL-F, or 98L-F, the 299F is the only compliant replacement. Putting a standard 299 in a fire-rated opening technically voids the fire listing on that assembly. The Von Duprin 22EO-F fire-rated rim touch bar exit device is the most commonly paired device with this strike at single-door fire-rated openings.
Compatible Von Duprin Exit Devices for the 299F Strike
The 299F works as the rim strike on the 22F, 88F, 98F, and 99F series fire-rated rim exit devices. It's also the correct top strike on fire-rated surface vertical rod configurations in the same series. As with the standard 299, it's a non-handed component and doesn't require specifying door hand.
The 299F also sees use in openings where local authorities having jurisdiction require a fire-rated strike even on an otherwise non-rated assembly. If there's any question on the opening rating, confirm with your door hardware distributor or the AHJ before specifying the strike model.
Von Duprin 299F Dimensions and Technical Specs
The 299F measures 1-1/4 inches wide by 2-7/8 inches tall with a slotted hole spacing of 2-1/8 inches on center. Roller projection is 13/16 inches. These dimensions match the standard 299, so the 299F drops into the same frame prep without modification. It ships with a shim and mounting screws, and the shim adjustment process is the same as for the standard model.
Finish Options for the Von Duprin 299F
The 299F is available in five finishes. US19 matte black is the base price option and the most popular for modern commercial interiors and storefront applications. US32D satin stainless steel runs slightly higher and reads close to satin chrome in most frame contexts. Premium finishes include US3 polished brass, US4 satin brass, US10 satin bronze, and US10B oil rubbed bronze, which come up in hospitality, institutional, and historic renovation projects.
Note that the 299F doesn't include US26D satin chrome as a stocked option at the base price point, which differs from the standard non-rated 299. If the opening specification calls specifically for US26D, confirm availability at order time or consider whether US32D satin stainless meets the spec.
