On a standard exit device, the push pad is always free for egress from the inside. On a -2 configured device, a key cylinder on the inside controls whether the push bar can retract the latch. This means the door cannot be opened from the push side without a key, making it suitable for high-security applications where restricting interior access is required.

The -2SI adds a security indicator to the double cylinder configuration. The indicator shows occupied or vacant status at the outside of the door and signals whether the inside cylinder has been turned to the secured position. The -2SI option is common in behavioral health facilities, secure interview rooms, controlled access areas, and any application that requires both inside keyed control and outside visual status confirmation.

Both the -2 and -2SI configurations make the rim exit device handed, unlike the standard non-handed rim device. Handing must be specified when ordering -2 or -2SI devices. Double cylinder configurations are ideal for fire exit hardware and panic hardware that does not include the dogging feature.
