The Von Duprin 47427601 is the OEM M996 slider assembly for the RIM and Surface Vertical Rod (SV) configurations of the Von Duprin 98/99 Series exit device in the -2 (Double Cylinder) configuration. It covers nine device variants: 98/99-2 Rim, 98/9927-2 SVR (standard and fire-rated), 98/9947-2 CVR (standard and fire-rated), 98/9975-2 Mortise (standard and fire-rated), and 98/9949-2 CVC (standard and fire-rated).

The slider is the internal mechanical component inside the M996L motorized lever trim that the motor drives to control lever engagement. When this assembly wears or fails, the trim lever either stays locked regardless of motor activation, or stays unlocked regardless of the security state - both are field failure conditions that require replacing the slider. Per the Von Duprin M996L Installation Instructions (doc 113496): the E996 and M996 slider assemblies are physically the same component; however, replacing the slider with a new assembly is the recommended practice when converting from E996 solenoid trim to the current M996 motorized trim.

What the Von Duprin Slider Assembly Does in the M996 Trim

The M996 is the motorized version of Von Duprin's electrified lever trim, replacing the legacy E996 solenoid. When the M996 receives a control signal, the integrated motor drives the slider assembly through a lift arm interface. The slider moves to engage or disengage the lever from the latch retraction mechanism:

In the locked state, the slider blocks the lever hub - the outside lever (or the inside lever on -2 configurations) rotates freely without transmitting motion to the latch. From outside, the opening appears to have a lever but turning it doesn't open the door. In the unlocked state, the motor pulls the slider back, restoring the mechanical connection between the lever and latch retraction.

The M996 is furnished fail safe (FS) as standard - when power is lost, the slider moves to the unlocked position, allowing lever operation. It is convertible to fail secure (FSE) via the DIP switch on the M996 module without any additional components or tools.

The vandal-resistant breakaway lever protects the slider mechanism. When more than 35 lbs of torque is applied to the locked lever, the lever breaks away to a limp position rather than transmitting destructive force through the slider and into the motor module. The slider stays intact and the trim remains secured. Lifting the lever back into position restores normal operation.

Von Duprin Exit Device Parts: Installing the M996 RIM/SV Slider

From the Von Duprin M996L Installation Instruction (113496), the slider removal and installation procedure for RIM/SVR applications requires specific attention to two items:

To remove the old slider: loosen the two top mounting studs between 1/8 and 1/4 inch, tilt the slider assembly up at an angle, then remove the endplate and slider assembly together. Do not pull straight out - the angle is required.

Before installing the new slider: ensure grease is on the lift arm of the new slider assembly where it contacts the M996 stamping. Dry metal-to-metal contact at this interface accelerates wear and degrades the slider service life.

Critical device requirement: for all RIM and SVR applications using M996L trim, the NL drive screw must be installed in the exit device center case cam with the lock slide in the up position. The device ships from the factory with the NL drive screw pre-installed. Confirm it is in place before installing the M996 trim.

Von Duprin Slider Assembly: -2 Double Cylinder Application

The -2 (Double Cylinder) suffix designates that both the outside and inside positions of the exit device require a cylinder for lever operation - there is no freely operating inside lever for egress without a key or electric signal. This configuration restricts inside egress and is used in high-security controlled access points: evidence rooms, pharmaceutical storage, secured behavioral health units, and controlled stairwells where unauthorized egress must be prevented.

The M996 provides the electric signal path that allows authorized personnel to remotely unlock the -2 configuration from outside without a key - the motor releases the slider and the inside lever becomes operable. The M996 works with 12VDC or 24VDC power supplies.
