The Schlage 40-327 is the OEM classroom security conversion kit for the ND Series cylindrical lock, documented in the official Allegion Classroom Security Conversion Kits Sell Sheet (doc 110898). It converts an installed ND70 (traditional classroom) or ND94 (traditional classroom with Vandlgard) lock to the ND80 storeroom function, which allows the door to be locked from inside the room without a key and without opening the door. Finish and lever design must be specified at time of order. Ordering format: part number, lever, finish (example: 40-327 RHO 626).
Why Schools Are Converting ND70 and ND94 Classroom Locks
Traditional classroom locks (ND70 and ND94) were designed to be locked from outside the room with a key. Under this design, locking the classroom door during an emergency requires someone to open the door, step into the corridor, insert a key from the hallway side, lock the lever, and then re-enter the room. That sequence puts the person operating the lock at risk in an active threat scenario.
The 40-327 conversion kit addresses this directly. By converting the installed ND70 or ND94 to the ND80 storeroom function, the conversion adds an inside push button on the inside trim. A teacher or staff member can lock the outside lever from inside the room without a key, without opening the door, and without stepping into the corridor. One push of the inside button, the outside lever is locked. The inside lever remains always free for egress regardless of the lock state.
The Allegion Classroom Security Conversion Kits sell sheet specifically addresses why improvised solutions are inadequate: "Door magnets, wood wedges, and kick down stops are not recommended, as they too may require teachers to open the door or step outside the classroom. Additionally, if the building does not have fire protection sprinkler systems, these devices do not meet fire code." The 40-327 is the code-compliant conversion that eliminates the need for any improvised door barricade.
Schlage 40-327 Kit: ND70 and ND94 Source Functions
The 40-327 kit covers two source functions in the ND Series classroom lock catalog:
ND70 Traditional Classroom: The outside lever is made inoperative by key from outside only. Inside lever always free. This is the standard classroom security function installed in most K-12 schools built before current active shooter response protocols changed hardware specifications. The ND70 provides classroom lockdown only from outside, which is the limitation this conversion addresses.
ND94 Traditional Classroom with Vandlgard: Functionally identical to the ND70 with the addition of the Vandlgard breakaway lever on the outside trim. When the outside lever is in the locked state, it can rotate freely downward under excessive lateral force without transmitting that force into the lock mechanism. The 40-327 converts ND94 installations to ND80 with the same result as ND70 conversions.
Schlage ND Series Parts: 40-327 in the Classroom Conversion Kit Family
The Allegion classroom security conversion kit catalog includes two kits for the ND Series, each covering a different source function group:
40-327 (this product) = Converts ND70 or ND94 to ND80. For schools with traditional classroom (exterior lockdown only) locks that need inside lockdown capability added.
40-329 = Converts ND75 or ND95 to a different target function. ND75 is the classroom security function (interior/exterior lockdown) and ND95 is the Vandlgard version of ND75. This kit serves buildings where the classroom security function is already installed but a different upgrade target is required.
The 40-327 requires specifying the lever design and finish because the conversion kit replaces or modifies trim components. Any Schlage ND Series lever design is available (Rhodes, Athens, Sparta, Broadway, and others). All levers in the ND Series are non-handed and ADA compliant per ANSI A117.1, requiring no more than 5 pounds of activation force.
