Von Duprin 304L Vertical Rod Bottom Strike, Standard Strike

Every surface vertical rod exit device needs two strikes to work properly: one at the top and one at the bottom. If the bottom strike is worn, damaged, or simply missing from a floor replacement or renovation, the bottom rod has nothing to latch into and the door won't secure correctly. The Von Duprin 304L Vertical Rod Bottom Strike is the standard floor-mounted replacement strike for some of Von Duprin's most widely installed SVR exit device series, and it's the part that keeps the bottom rod engaged every time the door closes.

This is a floor-mounted mortise strike, which means it drops into the floor rather than sitting on the surface. The outer flange measures 1-7/8 inches by 1-7/8 inches, the inner opening is 1-1/8 inches by 1-1/8 inches, and the projection depth into the floor is 13/16 inches. The bottom rod on a Von Duprin SVR device drops into that opening when the door closes, securing the bottom of the door independently from the top latch. Mounting screws are included.

The cross-reference number for the 304L is 030659, so if you're working from older parts documentation or a service manual that uses the legacy numbering, that's the same part.

Compatible Von Duprin Exit Device Models

The 304L is confirmed for the following Von Duprin SVR and CVR devices: 22, 33A, 35A, 75, 78, 98/9927, and 98/9957. These cover both surface vertical rod and concealed vertical rod configurations across standard single door and double door applications. If you're maintaining a building with Von Duprin exit devices across any of these series, the 304L is the correct bottom strike for standard non-fire-rated installations.

It's worth noting this is the non-fire-rated version. Fire-rated SVR applications use a different bottom strike, so if the device you're servicing is fire-rated, make sure to confirm which strike applies before ordering. If you're not sure, the Von Duprin 98/9927 SVR Parts Manual is available as a free download in our price books and catalogs section and shows the full parts breakdown for these device families.

Why Bottom Strikes Fail and When to Replace

Bottom strikes take a beating in high-traffic buildings. The floor around the strike opening gets refinished, replaced, or damaged over time, and the strike itself can corrode, get bent from heavy use, or simply disappear during a flooring renovation when a contractor doesn't know what they're looking at. Any of those situations puts the bottom rod engagement at risk.

A door that's missing or has a damaged bottom strike will feel loose at the base, swing more than it should, or fail to hold the lower edge of the door tightly to the frame. In security-sensitive applications like stairwells, service corridors, and exterior entries, that kind of gap isn't acceptable. Replacing the 304L is a straightforward repair that restores full rod engagement and gets the door behaving the way it was designed to.
