The Von Duprin 299 is the standard panic strike for rim exit devices and the top strike for vertical rod exit devices across Von Duprin's 22, 88, 98, and 99 Series. If you're specifying hardware for a commercial door that uses one of these exit devices, the 299 is the factory-correct strike to pair with it. It keeps the latch bolt captured when the door is closed and releases it cleanly when someone pushes the exit bar, which is exactly what a code-compliant commercial egress door needs to do every time.

The 299 is also compatible with the 98/9957 and the 22/78/88/98/9927/57 Series standard panic strike configurations, which covers a substantial portion of Von Duprin's commercial exit device range. If you're replacing a worn or damaged strike on an existing installation, verifying your exit device series against that compatibility list takes seconds and saves a return trip.

What a Top Strike Does and Why It Matters

On a vertical rod exit device, the top rod engages a strike mounted at the top of the door frame. That's the 299 when it's functioning as a top strike. On a rim device, it functions as the rim strike that receives the latchbolt at the door frame. In both cases, the strike is a critical piece of the exit function. A worn or misaligned strike causes latching problems, increases door noise, and in a commercial building can create a compliance issue under NFPA 80 or local fire code if the door fails to latch properly.

The 299 is heavy duty, ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 rated, and built to handle the kind of high-cycle use that stairwells, corridors, and high-traffic egress doors see in institutional and commercial environments. Grade 1 is the highest classification under ANSI/BHMA A156.3, covering operational cycles, strength, and finish durability. Most architects and specifiers won't accept anything below Grade 1 on a code-required exit door.

Finish Options

The 299 is available in a full range of finishes to match your door hardware specification:

  • US19 / Flat Black Coated (622)
  • US10B / Oil Rubbed Bronze
  • US26D / Satin Chrome (most common for commercial stainless)
  • US4 / Satin Brass
  • US10 / Satin Bronze
  • US3 / Bright Brass
  • US26 / Bright Chrome

If you're matching an existing installation, the finish code is usually stamped on the back of the device or listed on the original hardware schedule. US26D is the most common choice for healthcare, education, and commercial office because it reads as a neutral satin grey and hides wear well over time.

Von Duprin 299 vs 299F: What's the Difference

The 299F is the fire-rated version of this strike. It carries a UL fire label and is required when the door assembly is a rated fire door. If your door schedule specifies a fire rating (typically 20-minute, 45-minute, 60-minute, or 90-minute), you need the 299F rather than the standard 299. If the door is not a rated assembly, the 299 is the correct choice. Ordering the wrong one can cause a code deficiency during inspection.

For exit alarm applications, if you're working on a Von Duprin 2670 Guard-X installation, you'll also want to make sure your exit device power supply is specified correctly alongside the strike hardware.

Who Needs the Von Duprin 299

Locksmiths replacing hardware on existing Von Duprin installations will reach for this strike regularly. Contractors specifying hardware for new commercial construction who are running Von Duprin 98/99 rim devices on corridor or stairwell doors will have the 299 on their hardware schedule. Facilities managers dealing with a door that won't latch properly on a Von Duprin exit device should check the strike first before assuming the device itself needs replacement. A damaged or out-of-adjustment 299 causes most of the latching failures we see on this device family.

If you're building out a full Von Duprin hardware package, browse the full range of exit devices and panic bar parts available at Security Parts. We carry Von Duprin products across their commercial catalog, including rim exit devices, vertical rod devices, electric latch retraction kits, and the accessories and replacement parts that keep these systems running in the field.

Why Order from Security Parts

Security Parts is a specialist distributor for commercial door hardware and life-safety components. When you order the Von Duprin 299 here, you're ordering from a catalog built specifically for locksmiths, contractors, and facilities teams, not a general building supply house that happens to carry a few hardware SKUs. We stock Von Duprin parts across their full range, and if you need to confirm finish availability or compatibility for a specific project, our team can help before you place the order.

Contractors ordering multiple components for a Von Duprin installation can reference related parts including exit devices and accessory hardware to consolidate procurement in one place.
