The  Schlage 12-340 is the OEM adjustable bolt for the Schlage CS210 Series interconnected lock, documented in the Schlage CS210 Service Manual as one of two field-replaceable bolt components in the CS210 assembly - the 12-340 (adjustable deadbolt) and the 16-260 (dead latch) work together as the complete bolt assembly in the CS210 interconnected system. This is the deadbolt portion. Finish must be specified at time of order. The kit ships with both a square corner and a round corner faceplate, accommodating either door edge preparation from one part number.

The bolt is adjustable for both 2-3/8" and 2-3/4" backset - the setting changes without disassembly, using Schlage's 360-degree helical slot mechanism that rotates the inner bolt housing relative to the outer housing to shift the backset dimension. No tools or additional hardware are required to switch between backset positions.

What the Schlage CS210 Interconnected Lock Is

The CS210 Series is Schlage's Commercial Grade 2 interconnected lock, rated to ANSI A156.25 and ADA compliant across all 14 available lever styles. "Interconnected" means the deadbolt and latch operate together through a single interior lever turn - when the inside lever is rotated, it simultaneously retracts both the deadbolt (12-340) and the dead latch (16-260), releasing the door in one motion without requiring a separate thumb turn operation.

This is the key functional distinction from a standard lock with a separate deadbolt and latch. In a standard setup, egress requires turning the lever (retracts the latch) and separately operating the thumb turn (retracts the deadbolt). In the CS210 interconnected system, one inside lever handle pulls both bolts back simultaneously. That simultaneous retraction is the core requirement for strict life safety egress codes - specifically NFPA 101 and IBC provisions for occupancies where fast, unobstructed egress is the priority.

Schlage Adjustable Bolt: The Backset Adjustment Mechanism

The 12-340 uses Schlage's patented adjustable deadbolt design documented in US Patent 7,695,032. The outer bolt housing contains a helical slot running approximately 360 degrees. The inner bolt housing has a protrusion that rides in that slot. Rotating the inner housing relative to the outer housing travels the protrusion through the helical path, which physically repositions the bolt case along the axis - changing the backset dimension from 2-3/8" (60mm) to 2-3/4" (70mm) or back without removing the bolt from the door.

This design eliminates the need to stock two separate bolt assemblies for different backset configurations. One 12-340 covers both standard backset dimensions used in commercial and residential door preparations. On a multi-door project with mixed 2-3/8" and 2-3/4" backset doors, all doors can be serviced from the same part number.

Schlage CS210 Lock Parts: Corner Types and Finish Options

Both corner styles are included in the kit. The square corner faceplate (1" x 2-1/4") matches the standard ANSI A115.1 commercial door preparation - a flat-cornered rectangular recess routed in the door edge. The round corner faceplate covers doors where the router cut has radiused corners. You use whichever matches the existing door without ordering a separate part.

Six finish options are available for the 12-340 to match the installed CS210 hardware:

626 / US26D = Satin Chrome, the most widely specified commercial finish. 

625 / US26 = Bright Chrome. 

619 / US15 = Satin Nickel. 

605 / US3 = Bright Brass. 

643E = Aged Bronze. 

622 / US19 = Powder-Coated Matte Black.

The CS210 Series is available in multiple cylinder configurations: RD (conventional), PD (6-pin conventional), JD (Full Size Interchangeable Core, less core), and BD (Small Format Interchangeable Core, less core). The 12-340 replacement bolt is the same part across all cylinder variants - the cylinder type doesn't affect the bolt assembly.

The CS210 also features independent heavy-duty lever torsion springs, heat-treated steel locking components, and adjustable 4-inch or 5.5-inch center-to-center spacing between the deadbolt and latch positions to accommodate different door preparations without additional hardware.
