The Schlage 12-316 is the OEM circular drive-in deadbolt for the Schlage B Series, documented in the Schlage B Series Service Manual. It is the drive-in format deadbolt - a 1" diameter cylindrical housing that inserts directly into a standard 1" bore hole in the door edge without requiring a separate faceplate, mortise cutout, or mounting screws. Backset adjusts between 2-3/8" and 2-3/4" without disassembly. The UL label confirms it is listed for use on UL-rated fire door assemblies. Finish must be specified at time of order.

This is the correct replacement when the installed deadbolt on a B Series installation is the circular drive-in format. If the existing deadbolt has a rectangular faceplate visible on the door edge, this part does not apply - that configuration uses a mortise-type deadbolt such as the 12-288 or 12-291. Confirm the door edge preparation (bore hole vs mortise cutout) before ordering.

What a Drive-In Deadbolt Is and Why It's Used

A faceplate-mounted deadbolt requires two things: a rectangular mortise cutout in the door edge and screws that pull the faceplate flush to the door surface. A drive-in deadbolt needs neither. The 1" circular housing slides directly into a standard 1" bore hole - the same crossbore diameter used for cylindrical lock installation - and sits in the door without any visible faceplate on the door edge.

This matters in several real-world situations. Doors prepped for a cylindrical lock with only the standard crossbore have a 1" bore hole at the edge. Adding a deadbolt to that door using the drive-in format works without any additional door modification - no chiseling, no rectangular mortise, no additional cutout. The 12-316 slides in and is done.

Drive-in deadbolts also produce a cleaner edge appearance. With no faceplate visible on the door edge, the installation looks factory-finished and is less susceptible to the cosmetic damage and corrosion that can develop around exposed faceplate screws over time.

Schlage Deadbolt Set: Bolt Construction and Anti-Saw Protection

The 12-316 bolt is solid zinc construction with a concealed hardened steel anti-saw pin insert. The bolt body itself is zinc - lightweight and corrosion resistant. The anti-saw pin is a separate hardened steel rod running through the center of the bolt. When someone attempts to cut through the extended bolt with a hacksaw - one of the most common forced entry methods on exposed deadbolts - the saw contacts the spinning steel anti-saw pin, which resists cutting and spins against the saw blade.

Without the anti-saw pin, a standard zinc or soft-metal bolt can be sawed through in under a minute with basic tools. With the hardened insert, the cutting time increases dramatically. The anti-saw pin is why the B Series deadbolts carry their forced-entry resistance ratings.

Bolt throw is 1" - the bolt projects 1" into the strike when fully extended. One inch of throw is the ANSI minimum for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt and is sufficient for standard commercial door frame strikes.

Schlage B Series Drive-In Deadbolt: UL Label and Fire Door Application

The "UL label" designation on the 12-316 is the key specification for fire-rated openings. UL-listed fire door assemblies require that all hardware installed on the door and frame be UL listed and appropriate for the fire rating of the assembly. A deadbolt without a UL listing cannot legally be installed on a fire-rated opening in most jurisdictions.

The 12-316 carries UL listing for fire door use, which means it can be specified on B Series installations that are on fire-rated openings. This matters specifically on corridor-to-stairwell doors, shaft enclosure doors, and corridor fire doors where the deadbolt is part of the required fire separation hardware.

For Schlage B Series deadbolt installations requiring the faceplate-mounted format rather than drive-in, the companion parts are the 12-288 (1" x 2-1/4" square corner) and the 12-290 (circular drive-in, B500 Series certified). Confirm the exact B Series deadbolt model installed before selecting between drive-in and faceplate formats.
