Two Roles of the 024416-012 in the Falcon T Series Trim Assembly

The Trim Assembly is a distinct diagram section in the T Series Parts Manual, separate from the Chassis Assembly. The Chassis Assembly covers the internal mechanism components (retractor, springs, slide catches). The Trim Assembly covers the externally visible components and fasteners: the latch bolt assembly, latch faceplate, through-bolt hardware, and the fasteners that secure them.

The 024416-012 screw appears in the Trim Assembly diagram in two positions. The first is the latch faceplate position. The latch faceplate is the metal plate visible on the door edge face, covering the latch bolt case and presenting the latch bolt opening through which the bolt extends to engage the strike. The faceplate is secured to the door edge by two screws, one at the top and one at the bottom of the plate. These are the 8-32 x 3/4 inch 024416-012 screws. If these screws loosen, the faceplate can shift and misalign the latch bolt opening with the bolt travel path, causing the latch bolt to drag on the faceplate opening and produce stiff or sluggish latch operation.

The second position is the strike. Within the T Series Trim Assembly, certain strike configurations use smaller fasteners than the full ANSI strike plate. The 024416-012 is the screw for these positions. Falcon 024416-012 vs 021164-016: Two Different Strike Screws for Two Different Positions

The T Series Parts Manual documents two different screws for strike-related positions. The 021164-016 is the ANSI Strike Screw, number 12-24 x 1 inch combo, which appears in the Strikes and Dust Boxes section for securing the full 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike plate to the door frame. The 024416-012 is the smaller 8-32 x 3/4 inch screw that appears in the Trim Assembly for the latch faceplate and the trim-side strike positions.

The size difference reflects the structural difference between the two applications. The full ANSI strike plate requires a larger number 12 screw (0.216 inch diameter) for the holding strength needed to resist kick-in forced entry attempts on the frame side. The latch faceplate and trim strike positions require only the number 8 screw (0.164 inch diameter) because they are not the primary forced entry load path at this location. Substituting a 12-24 screw for an 8-32 position or vice versa produces either a screw that does not thread correctly or a screw that strips the threads in the mounting hole due to size mismatch.

Finish Matching and T Series Function Coverage

The 024416-012 screw head is visible at the door edge latch faceplate position after installation. Finish matching is therefore a functional requirement, not only an aesthetic one. A mismatched finish screw head at the latch faceplate is visible to building occupants and may indicate to a potential intruder that a screw was recently replaced with a non-OEM component.
