What the Von Duprin PNT-1 Pneumatic Power Transfer Does

The Von Duprin pneumatically controlled exit device system provides delayed egress through an air cylinder mechanism instead of an electric solenoid timer. A pneumatic pressure source located at the door frame or in the wall supplies constant low-pressure air. The exit device mounted on the door contains an air cylinder assembly that controls latch retraction and release timing in response to changes in applied air pressure. When the pushbar is pressed, the air cylinder mechanism initiates the delayed egress timing cycle before allowing the latch to retract and the door to open.

For this system to function, air pressure must travel from the pneumatic source at the fixed door frame to the air cylinder assembly in the exit device on the moving door leaf. This is the function of the 012014-36 PNT-1. It provides the fluid connection pathway between those two points, with a protected air line that flexes as the door opens and closes and a transfer mechanism that protects the air line at the frame-to-door interface where the line is most vulnerable to wear from door cycling.

The protection mechanism at the door frame and door interface is a core element of the PNT-1 design. Without protection at this point, repeated door cycling would fatigue and rupture the air line as it bends and unbends with each door operation. The PNT-1 housing guides and shields the line through this zone throughout the service life of the installation.

 

Pneumatic vs Electric Power Transfer: Why the PNT-1 Exists

Electrified exit device applications typically use an electric power transfer (EPT) to pass low-voltage wiring from the fixed frame to the moving door leaf. The EPT carries electrical signals and power for card readers, request-to-exit switches, and electrified latch retraction devices. The Von Duprin pneumatic delayed egress system bypasses this electrical architecture for the delay mechanism entirely.

The pneumatic approach provides three operational advantages over electric delay systems. The first is that no electrical power is required at the door leaf itself for the delay function. Only the pneumatic pressure source requires power, and that source can be located anywhere in the facility at a distance from the door. The second is reduced wiring complexity. A pneumatic air line requires no conduit, no wire routing, and no connection to access control panels. The third is environmental durability. The code requires the door to remain latched for a defined period after initial pushbar contact, with an immediate audible and visible alarm, and an immediate release if the building fire alarm or sprinkler system activates.
