Von Duprin 010061 Security Screw Hex Key 7/32"

Available (3 - 4 Weeks)

The Von Duprin 010061 is the OEM Security Screw Hex Key, 7/32 inch, documented in the Von Duprin Price Book (Effective October 7, 2024). It is the largest of the three Von Duprin security hex keys in the price book, driving the #10 hex socket security screws used at sex bolt through-bolt positions and structural cover plate fastener locations in Von Duprin exit device assemblies. The 7/32 inch size is larger than both the standard dogging key (5/32 inch) and the small security key (1/8 inch), making it a distinct third tool in the Von Duprin hex key service family. Available (3-4 weeks).

Why the 010061 Is Larger Than the Standard Dogging Key

The hex dogging bolt in Von Duprin exit device center cases uses a 5/32 inch hex socket, which is the standard drive size for #8 hex socket machine screws. The 010059 hex wrench at 5/32 inch is the correct tool for that operation. The 010061 at 7/32 inch is a full size larger, designed to engage #10 hex socket machine screws. These appear in positions requiring greater holding strength than #8 screws can provide.

The Von Duprin Auxiliary Hardware Catalog specifies that sex bolts (825 sex bolts) are the primary trim through-bolting fastener across multiple exit device configurations. A sex bolt is a male-female threaded fastener pair: one end passes through the outside trim rose, through the door, and threads into the mating fastener on the inside face. The hex socket head on certain sex bolt configurations requires a 7/32 inch key for installation and removal. The official catalog notes that "sex bolts are furnished with devices and may have different screw lengths than indicated" - confirming that multiple sex bolt configurations exist with varying drive requirements.

Von Duprin 010061: Security Screw Context at Structural Positions

The "security screw" designation on the 010061 identifies its application at anti-tamper positions. At the sex bolt through-bolt locations on outside trim, using a larger #10 hex socket fastener instead of a smaller #8 provides two advantages simultaneously. First, the larger fastener delivers greater clamping force through the door, which strengthens the trim attachment and resists attempts to force the outside trim away from the door face. Second, the specialized 7/32 inch hex drive means a person cannot drive or remove these fasteners using the common 5/32 inch hex dogging key, Phillips driver, or flat screwdriver that someone might obtain.

At cover plate security positions on some 88 Series and 98/99 Series exit devices, the same 7/32 inch security screws appear at points where the cover plate conceals internal device components. Preventing unauthorized cover plate removal protects the internal mechanism from tampering that could defeat the exit device function or the latch engagement.

The Von Duprin Hex Key Service Family: Where 010061 Fits

Von Duprin maintains three distinct hex keys in the exit device service catalog, each for a different fastener size and application tier. Understanding which key is needed for which operation prevents rounding of hex socket heads and ensures the correct fastener is driven to the correct torque.

010059 (5/32 inch): The standard service key for hex dogging and #8 hex socket trim screws. Used in routine installation and service across the full Von Duprin exit device catalog. Every field technician servicing Von Duprin devices should carry this tool.

010060 (1/8 inch): The small security screw key for #4 and #6 hex socket anti-tamper screws at trim rose mounting and cylinder guard positions. Required only when small security fasteners are specified at outside trim positions in high-security applications.

010061 (7/32 inch): The large security screw key for #10 hex socket screws at sex bolt through-bolt and structural cover plate positions. Required when through-bolting outside trim to the exit device center case using larger-format security fasteners.

Facilities maintaining Von Duprin exit devices with security trim configurations should stock all three keys. Using the wrong size key for any of these positions risks rounding the hex socket head, which compromises both security and serviceability of the fastener position.
